L’ORÉAL Brazil, in partnership with UNESCO Office in Brazil and the Brazilian Academy of Science, has elected young scientists winners of the students’ programme For Women in Science of this year. Among the 356 registrations, seven projects were selected, being two from the state of Rio Grande do Sul and the other five by the Federal District, Para, Mato Grosso, Sao Paulo and Santa Catarina. The award ceremony is taken place on Wednesday, 23 October, at Palacete Modesto Leal in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil).

About the For Women in Science award
Launched in 1998, the For Women in Science, a
partnership between L’Oréal Foundation and UNESCO, was the first award
dedicated to women scientists in the world. After 15 years, it has
already awarded 77 notable scientists of different continents, among
them the Brazilians Mayana Zatz, geneticist from USP; Belita Koiller,
physicist from UFRJ; Lucia Previato, biodoctor from UFRJ, the
astrophysicist Beatriz Barbuy, from USP, and the physicist Marcia
Barbosa, from UFGRS, winner of the international awards 2013.
Besides the recognition of great world scientists,
the programme, in its International and regional levels, have already
motivated 1.700 scientists of 108 different countries to continue their
careers and their important research projects. The international
laureates Ada Yonath and Elizabeth Blackburn won the Nobel Prizes in
Chemistry and Medicine in 2009, respectively.
