Abuja — The list of beneficiaries of the Special Scholarship Programme as released by the office of Special Adviser to the President on Niger Delta has generated controversy, as Akwa Ibom State has kicked against it.
The state expressed its reservations over the list through a member representing Esit-Eket/Eket/Onna/Ibeno Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Bassey Dan-Abia Jnr, who condemned, in strong terms, the final list of 254 beneficiaries of the scholarship programme as released last Friday.
Dan-Abia, in his condemnation of the list, also accused Kingsley Kuku, the Special Adviser to the President on Niger Delta of nepotism in the selection of the beneficiaries.
The scholarship scheme, which is coordinated by Kuku's office, was put together to assist brilliant students in the oil producing states to acquire university education.
The scholarship is available only to those who record the least minimum cut off mark of 180 at the Universities Matriculation Examination (UME) conducted by the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB).
Dan-Abia, in a press statement issued and personally signed by him on Sunday, said the choice of beneficiaries of the programme was skewed against his state, Akwa Ibom, un-justifiably while other states were unduly favoured.
Akwa Ibom, the biggest oil producing state in the country, was allotted only three slots in the programme while other states like Ondo, the home state of Kuku, was allotted 43 slots.
In the list advertised in two national newspapers on Friday, Benue State got one slot, Cross River got three slots, Bayelsa got 101 slots, Delta got 55 slots, Edo got 10 slots, Imo got 10 slots, while Rivers got 28 slots.
His words: "I wait to be educated on why Akwa Ibom State, the largest contributor to the nation's oil wealth, was so treated. Is the office of Special Adviser to the President on Niger Delta telling Nigerians that only three persons from Akwa Ibom State scored 180 and above in the last JAMB examination? Is it that not a single girl of Akwa Ibom origin scored as much as 180 in the examination?
